The Company

Tourist Nature was founded by Silver (Scivoli Silverio born in Carrara - Italy), in September 1993.

In 1994 Silver started organising dog sled tours. The following year Ilulissat Tourist Nature was the first company travelling by dog sled with tourists to Uummannaq. The tour was a success and it was also organised in 1996 and 1997.  Silver has been having the same group of dog sled drivers (about 12 local fishermen) for the last 10 years.

On April 10, 1994 Ilulissat Tourist Nature attempted a record to get in the "Guinness Book of Records". The attempt was to make the longest dog sled in the world. The dog sled was 21.55 m in length and the handlebar 2.92 m in height. The weight was approx. 1,750 kg, and the passenger capacity was 103. It was pulled a distance of 110.9 m in 50 seconds by 260 dogs.

In 1995 Ilulissat Tourist Nature put together a group of 6 boats in order to provide tourists the best service in the area. This group of boat worked with Ilulissat Tourist Nature for 5 years.

In 1999 Silver founded the Ataa Summer Camp in Ataa. Ataa at that time was an abandoned inuit settlement. Ilulissat Tourist Nature built 3 small cabins that for the last 9 years have been offering accommodation to thousands of tourists that in the summer months had spent their holidays enjoying the nature and kayaking on the calm waters of the Ataa Sund.

In 2003, after years of non official sailing tours, Ilulissat Tourist Nature officially started the boat tour to the village of Ilimanaq (south of Ilulissat). This tour has helped developing the village of Ilimanaq bringing tourism in winter and summer months.

Silver and Ilulissat Tourist Nature can now provide to their clients more than 15 years experience in the tourism business in the Disko Bay area.

Ilulissat Tourist Nature, as the company name said, respect the nature and the Inuit culture. In the company work greenlandics people and the company works with the greenlandic.

If you are looking for nature, culture and outdoor activities, Ilulissat Tourist Nature is the right tour operator for you. Come to our office and enjoy a cup of coffee listening to Silver's stories is part of the experience in Greenland.

The Shop (click here to see where we are)

In the city centre, our shop is few minutes walking from the museum and the harbour. Here you can find a cosy and friendly atmosphere and many objects like: postcards, photos, maps, t-shirts, seal, lamb and reindeer skins, and many greenlandic handcrafts. In particular the tupilaks.

In old times Tupilaks were made out of animal bones, wrapped in piecies of skin and placed in the kayak or on the sled of the anemies hoping that they would die. They believed that the bones had evil spirits and that in that way they would have reborned. Unfortunately, if the reason of hate wasn't real, or the victim was capable of stronger and more powerful magic rituals, the tupilak would attack the person who made it instead. Today the Tupilaks are made out of wood, narwhale horns, rendeer bones or horns and they do not contain magic anymore but they are only souvenirs.
