KAYAKING GREENLAND - ILULISSAT 69°13N

History indicate that kayaks are at least 4000 years old. The eskimos and the population living in the arctic regions developed kayak to hunt on lakes and sea.  The inuit word for kayak is qajaq. Originally it was made of a wooden frame and covered by stretched seal skin. Today the inuit are not using kayaks for hunting anymore but kayaks are still a traditional and culture object in Greenland.

Kayaking along the coast of the disko bay area among the icebergs is still an adventure that many people every summer want to experience.

Ilulissat Tourist Nature can arrange this adventure holiday for you. At the Smilla Holiday Centre in Ataa (an old inuit settlement 65km north of Ilulissat) Ilulissat Tourist Nature have for rent 11 sea kayak (6 single and 5 double).

In the summer months the calm waters of the Ataa sund (the sea area in between the main land and Arve-princens island) are perfect  kayaking.
